Rules for Standing By

Here you'll learn:

  • general rules for standby travel—plus the secrets of maximizing your chances of getting on a standby flight.
  • not only last-minute standby, but also about another way to change your flight on the same day—by paying a small fee for early confirmation.
  • the standby rules of major airlines so that you can see which airlines offer free standby, which offer early confirmation with a fee, and which offer both.
  • basics about the very different standby policies of AirTran's young adult standby and Southwest AIrlines.

Note that, although you can no longer buy cheap "standby fares" for travel in the U.S. with the one exception of AirTran's young adult standby, you can still stand by for more convenient flights.

Here it is. This is one of the few moves that actually makes sense. Southwest doesn’t allow standby at all unless you purchase a full fare flight. On American and other traditional airlines, there are usually huge lists of people waiting to stand by. Often people will book the last flight of the day and then show up early. Too many standby passengers can really slow down the boarding process.
This will hit business travelers the hardest, since they are more likely to book a late flight and leave early if a meeting or conference ends early.
